So I just went to class and it was ridiculously hot today. This one guy, Chris, one of the teachers, and the world's skinniest man dressed up as a "stress ball." This costume consisted of completely wrapping himself in balloons. Needless to say it was a BIT difficult for him to do the postures but it was particularly funny when he popped a couple of them. Now, my guess is the costume of the year: Swine Flu. Will be out and about a bit tonight so we'll see.
Happy Halloween
Happy Halloween all. I'm not a big fan of Halloween so I won't be fixing up any costume or anything. I'm going to hot yoga at 4 where they have costume contests throughout the day. I'm sort of looking forward to seeing what people come up with considering it's 105 degrees! I'd wear a football jersey, but it might get a little warm so I'll be dressed as someone who doesn't like Halloween. Hopefully I can pull it off. Anyway, hope it's fun for anyone who is into it!!

BK Broiler!
Well, my favorite NJ cousin is headed for the big city tonight to hang for a few days. Always great to see him! Just got back from hot yoga. Today at work I had a feeling like I wanted to go and ROCK hot yoga and I sure did. I had a great class in the room where two other women had to run out of class, one to barf and one to never return. So I'm feeling pretty good about it. Looking forward to an action packed weekend.

Great Story
Our editor and chief just sent the following out to everyone and I wanted to share.
A touching story I just came across:
It involves 13-year-old Megan McNeal of Maryland, who like her dad is a huge Ravens fan. She was diagnosed in January with a rare form of cancer and has had a hellish last 10 months.
The Ravens found out about her story and had her to practice last week. She got to meet the whole team and get autographs, including one from her favorite player, Ray Lewis. Megan gave Ray and a few other players purple bracelets engraved with her name on them. The family had them made to sell at an upcoming benefit in Megan’s honor.
Well, earlier this week, a close family friend was flipping through her latest Sporting News Magazine, got to page 32 and couldn’t believe what she saw — a 2-page photo of Megan’s favorite player wearing the bracelet she’d given him. Needless to say, there are no more copies of the latest SN at any Barnes & Noble or Borders in eastern Maryland. Megan’s friends and family scooped them all up — “five at a time,” the friend reports.
We’ll have that photo blown up and sent to Megan tomorrow. Her father already has a place picked out for it on Megan’s wall.

The battle of window vs. heater
So I have lived in this apartment for three winters now and every year it is always the same thing. The weather gets cold, my heater comes on FULL BLAST and I have no control over it. My only way to not turn my apartment into a sweat lodge (although, perhaps with my new found love for hot yoga, I should reconsider this) is to open the window. The problem is, if the window is open too little, said sweat lodge commences, too much, and we get the meat locker effect. I've gotten pretty good at the balance, but it is an ongoing battle. And don't even get me started on the wicked hot pole running through my bathroom...

My latest adventure in plant care
For those of you who have known me awhile, you might know that I have a bit of a sordid history with plants. I have, unfortunately, killed every plant that has ever been in my care, including a cactus. So when my coworker brought a bonsai tree (notoriously the hardest plants to care for) to work for us to co-parent in our cube, I was a little hesitant to take on the responsibility yet again for fear of the same dire outcome. The first few weeks of the plant's life were nice. We were watering it, talking to it, showering it with love and attention. Anything it asked for, we obliged. You need fertilizer? Coming right up. Another spray of water? Don't even have to ask. Soon our nice, well-mannered plant was drowning in our love and attention and started to lose leaves and look generally awful. After a few days of completely losing hope of ever seeing our once vibrant bonsai flourish again, we put it on the window sill and said, we've done all we can for you, and prepared ourselves for a few final wilting days before it was gone forever. But to our surprise, just the opposite happened! After a few days, the once dry and tepid leaves were bright green and full of life. New sprouts emerged from the formerly bare trunk. Our bonsai is officially back to life, and we've learned a valuable lesson. Give your children everything they need not everything they want. They need to find their own way on the windowsill of life.

Typical!
So I went to a yoga class today, made it through, no problem. Finished, am standing up to fold up my mat and I put some sort of weird pressure on my knee. Felt it "stretch" and heard it squeak right below the knee cap. Not as ridiculous as some of my other injuries, but pretty silly. Hopefully it was just a minor stretch and RICE (don't worry, I'm already deep into RICEing it) should take care of it!
I enjoyed seeing the Vikings lose & Packers win today, and am now settling in to see if this ALCS is EVER going to be decided!

Anne & Hot Yoga - The second 30 days
So I've taken my 10 days off, my hamstring feels pretty good, I'm not tired anymore, and I got a few nights of bad food and a few drinks out of the way. Now, I'm not planning on doing another 30 days straight just because I don't want to have to schedule it and I really want to be able to stay well rested. That was the one thing I couldn't catch up on and I really like the idea of doing lots of hot yoga AND getting enough sleep! Anyway, it's humid and pretty warm today, goody. No reason to get back into it on a day when I'll be comfortable. :)

Returning a flu shot
Had a funny experience at work today. They were giving out free flu shots in the office just down the hall. Not having gotten a flu shot yet, I marched over there, signed the consent form and was stuck. Right after, the nurse looks at the consent form where I had written my company name, and said, "oh, these were just for Conde Nast" (technically I work for ACBJ which is a subsidiary of Conde Nast's parent company). It was particularly funny because, we were both like, well, the shot has already been administered. Is she going to suck the vaccine out of my arm? A flu shot is definitely something you cannot take back!

Hamstring
Well, I know I said if people kept reading (and commenting!) that I'd keep writing. So far, so good! Just wanted to update any interested parties on the progress of my hamstring. It's still sore. I think it's improving though because i can finally feel the exact spot where it's injured, so I can ice/massage/stretch/rest right there. I am planning on staying away from hot yoga until Saturday or Sunday, so I think we should be ok by then.
Just had a great dinner out at one of my fave restaurants with one of my fave friends, with a coupon to boot! Going out for drinks for my bday on Friday so should be a good week. Really needing to embrace the onward and upward mentality I picked up in from my 30 day challenge, so far, so good!

happy birthday Mean Jean!
Just got home from a great weekend celebrating Mean Jean's bday. Packers won the game, weather was perfect and the company was great. Glad everyone could make it. Will link to the pics once I have them all posted, but it was a great weekend. Happy bday Mean Jean, and GO PACK!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 30!!!
D-O-N-E! I had a really strong class with Christian today. I think I've had him more than anyone else during this whole thing, I can almost recite his class..."Welcome to Bikram's beginning yoga class, your 90 minute, open-eyed moving mediation and awareness. I am Christian I will be leading you..." Today he told everyone in the class I had done it and I got a round of applause. Fun fun!
Now, I thought it would be appropriate since I did this for 30 days, to offer 30 thoughts/follow ups/things I've learned/recommendations about this challenge. They always try to get you to incorporate this practice into the rest of your life and I feel like there are a few instances where I can do that, so I will. These are in no particular order or importance, just as they come to me.
1. Hot yoga is hot and uncomfortable.
2. Hot yoga is hot and uncomfortable and more importantly, you are 100% out of control of that. But you are in control of your breathing, your body, your focus and your attitude and if those are strong, you can overcome the heat. Life parallel: focus strongly on bettering that which you can control.
3. Ice cold water tastes much better than room temperature water.
4. If you keep moving your body in a certain way, eventually it will go that way!
5. There are few things worth getting up at 6:15 am for. Over the last 30 days, I was only truly motivated enough to do it twice: Rangers game in person and Twins playoff game on TV.
6. It is impossible to keep up with daily sweat-soaked laundry. Impossible.
7. After spending enough time overheated sweating in a room with 30 strangers, you start to not care about the bulges, flab or imperfections. The only concern is staying cool, plus, who says I don't look good in a sports bra!?
8. There are yoga teachers and there are doctors. It seems like sometimes the lines are blurred. No matter how many times yoga teachers tell you "your body already makes all the 'medicine' it needs," I'd ask a doctor just to be sure.
9. A follow up to #s 1 & 2: hot yoga is hot, uncomfortable and you have no control, however it is finite. 90 minutes later and you're back out in the 75 degree bliss and feeling like something was accomplished. Life parallel: give whatever you're doing your all. Set goals and deadlines but if things don't go like you planned, onward and upward and move forward. There will always be another class.
10. Coconut water is really good if you mix it with pomegranate juice.
11. Knees can be healed while continuing to work out but watching out for them. Hamstrings cannot.
12. There's something really cool about a diverse group of people of different ages, races, genders, fitness levels, backgrounds, situations to come into a room and all work toward the same goal in their own way.
13. Sometimes nothing feels better than letting out a quiet but forceful curse word.
14. The RICE program continues to be the most effective injury healing tool I know. Jean and Lewdogg, your advocacy has been staunch.
15. The mind is a far bigger obstacle to what we can do than the body.
16. I now know 26 ancient Indian words including dandayamana–bibhaktapada–paschimotthanasana and poorna–Sslabhasanaa. I can pronounce them perfectly, but have no clue what any of them mean.
17. When you burn 1,000 calories per day, you can eat whatever you want.
18. If you're thinking about this undertaking, get at least three full outfits. Two just isn't enough.
19. Sleeping, resting, napping, catching zzzz, snoozing, whatever you want to call it, is not overrated.
20. Scheduling two hours into already busy days every day is not always easy.
21. It is very possible to over-hydrate! Who knew?
22. Dedication, determination and commitment are qualities we all have in us, but they are brought out best with the consistent support of close family and friends. Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone!
23. Turns out, after 20 years of sports/other athletic activities, I've found out that I can in fact put my foot over my head!
24. Hot yoga gives you guns that are ridiculously more awesome than weight lifting. I'll be selling tickets to the gun show starting tomorrow.
25. I still don't know what it means, but I'm starting to believe when they say the sweating gets rid of the "toxins" in your body. For two reasons: 1. I've been eating really well, the few times I've wavered from that, I have not felt well. 2. I haven't been drinking at all, I had a few beers one night (far fewer than I've had in evenings past) and had quite the hangover. There might be something to it!
26. I've kind of been liking not looking at my blackberry for 90 minutes every day. Don't count on it continuing if I'm not in class, but it's a nice break.
27. You get used to being covered in sweat from head to toe after about five days. A few sweat combatting tips for the ladies: use bobby pins if you have bangs, don't shave your legs right before class or they'll be too slippery and wash your face well before class. The pore clogger is a doozy.
28. I was always told that I'm very "coachable" when I played sports as a kid. I think I've found my perfect sport, the teacher instructs every movement, all I have to do is follow along.
29. Hot yoga is good for sinus infections.
30. I am stronger both mentally and physically than I thought and feel like I really accomplished something. Oh, and I am also superior to Bill in every way and look forward to reminding him of that until the end of time!!!!
I will start my free month after the weekend festivities. For now, Anne & Hot Yoga signing off!!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 29
Second to last day and I'm just ready for it to be over. Today, my hamstring hurt and I'm tired. But guess what, one more class to go and I'm on my own schedule. I'm ready for it.

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 28
Well I feel like I am on a roller coaster, and we're tchick tchick tchicking up the first hill but I'm in the back car and the first three cars have already gone over the hump on their way down! 2 more days and I'll be flying down that hill. Day 28 felt good. Had Christian the singer, he sang the golden years again. He called me out during class and asked me what day I was on. That was pretty cool for everyone in class to hear it. Made me smile!
So glad to be almost done because I have 2 big funsies coming up. Mean Jean's big Green Bay birthday extravaganza is this weekend! Keegans and Andrews converge on Green Bay for the Packers game and good times. Then, my birthday is next Friday! My favorite days of the year. :) I'll be kicking serious ass three days from now, ready to rock and roll!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 27
It's funny how sometimes when I don't want to go to class, I have some of the best classes. I was tired today, I got a haircut at 115 and then I met a couple friends at about 230 at Dempsey's pub right by my apt for some football action. I really didn't want to leave at 330 and go to class at 4 (I wanted to wait til 6) but I bit the bullet and went and it was a really good class.
Funny story, the reason I was tired today: last night, I'm fast asleep around 3 and I'm startled awake by one of my neighbors slamming open the front door and screaming "F@@K!!!" I hear a little stumbling around and another "F@@K!!!" Then he starts up the stairs and it gets comical. He lets out another one but under his breath (which I couldn't hear until he was on the stairs and closer to my door) he follows it with "I broke my foot, I broke my foot, I broke my foot." He gets to the landing, lets out another one with more "I broke my foot..." I didn't go out into the hall to offer my medical assistance (I have actually come home late with a broken ankle before, so I can sympathize.) I figured he seemed to be doing fine getting upstairs since the "F@@Ks" seemed to be getting fainter and fainter, so he'd wake up today and deal with his injury clear and sober. It was funny, but I was annoyed being woken up at 3!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 26
I'm in the home home stretch today. Had a good teacher today, a new guy, Ben who I haven't had before. I liked his class EXCEPT he's a Yankee fan and he mentioned last night's game during class. Talk about a hard time staying focused and calm! Hopefully the Yankees don't bring their umpires along to the game tomorrow.
Saw a great movie that I've been wanting to see for a long time tonight, Inglourious Basterds with Brad Pitt. It's typical Tarantino gore but was really entertaining! Anyway, 4 days of yoga left. Good thing cause I might fall asleep in class one of these days!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 25
Went to the early class today. Another less than 12 hour turn around between classes but it went really well. I HATE getting up that early, but the class is nice. It's always a little cooler, it's never crowded and I can just go straight to work on the bus that stops right outside the studio. Twins game starts at 6 today. Get your root on everyone!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 24
I can't believe I have less than a week left of this! Day 24 was good. Had Kyoko today, she always keeps the room hot, but she's motivating so it evens out. I was right next to this guy today, his name was Nate. This is another example of how hard this is. He was clearly in great shape. Looked like he lifted weights or ran or something because he was definitely fit. He had an impossible time with the class. Didn't do the last half hour. He ran out of water about 10 minutes before the end. I would have offered some of mine if it was earlier in the class. :)
Time for some baseball. No Twins tonight. They lost last night, I wasn't too surprised and they had a strong start so I'm still optimistic. Game 2 tomorrow. Fingers crossed!!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 23
Day 23 and all is well! Went to an early class today because, well you all know that the Twins are IN IT TO WIN IT! So I'll be watching that game starting 1 hour from now. So we got yoga out of the way to get to the priorities. GO TWINS!!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 22
well, day 22 of yoga was hot and fine, but onto more important things. GO TWINS!!! They won the playoff and are comin to town! I didn't go to yoga this morning, so I only got to watch the first 8 1/2 innings and had to go to class at 815 but I'm happy I went. Here's my reasoning: if the Twins lost, I would have been really pissed that I ruined my challenge and pissed that they lost the game. Since they won, I can watch all the highlights, and I get to keep watching them tomorrow, Friday and this weekend, at the least! However, now, I must go to bed immediately, because I will NOT miss any of the game tomorrow. Yay for day 23 of yoga, and GOOO TWINS!!!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 21
Made it through day 21. It was a good, strong class. I'm going at 645 AM tomorrow so I'm ready for the Twins game at 5. No time for a long post today. Packers Vikings going on right now. It's intense. GO PACK GO!!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 20
Into the 20s! Went to the 6pm class today. I was going to go early, but was too tired this morning to get up. I had kind of a tough class, my body is starting to say, um, hello, Anne, you haven't given us a day off in 20 days! To that I say, suck it up! 10 days left, we've got this. It's remarkable, I was mentally bothered today, and it's far tougher to do well in class if I don't have a strong mind than it is if I'm just feeling a little sore. Mind over matter really is true.
Going to be an interesting week. Tomorrow I will go at 6:30 and then get back in time for the Pack/Vikings on Monday Night Football. Then on Tuesday, the Twins/Tigers play their one game playoff at 5pm. So I might go to a morning class then, just to make sure I can give my full attention and support to that game! We'll see how that goes. If the Twins win, we have the playoffs to focus on, then things really get complicated! I am in the home stretch though!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 19
Great yoga day today! Class was hot and hard (duh) but I had a buddy there with me! Janice (you may know her from the comments) met me for the noon class. It's amazing how having a friend there to motivate you along really makes a difference. Then we had a fun lunch at the Sugar Cafe right down the street from the studio. She gets a week intro special at the studio, so I'm sure this isn't our last class together!
Now very important sports things happening today. Right now, Twins are still in it, and they're playing the Royals right now. They are 1 game back with 2 games to go, if they win 2 and the Tigers lose 2, Twins win the division. If the Twins win 1 and the Tigers lose 1, they tie and there is a playoff. So the race is far from decided. Root hard for the Twins! Off to the Rangers home opener at Madison Square Garden tonight. That should be a hoot too.

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 18
Wow, for some reason day 18 feels a lot farther along than day 17. Had a tiring and good class today. I might have company at class tomorrow, boy would that be awesome! A little motivation is always good. Will reveal the mystery guest if it happens at class. It's late and I'm tired, but on to day 19!

Anne & Hot Yoga - Day 17
Chilly days in NYC make for good hot yoga classes! Had Kyoko today who is amazing at doing the class but I have a hard time understanding her sometimes. She's really motivational though. I'm worn out again, but ahhh almost the weekend and lots of sleeeeep. Thursdays seem to be the hardest. Most worn out from work, least motivation to get to class. But made it!
