The swine continues

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Mine was a little delayed because of the swine, but today my great friends Will and Krista stopped by with a full on Thanksgiving dinner for me, complete with turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, corn, gravy, cannolis, apple pie and pumpkin pie.  Talk about great friends!
There is also a "chillin' with Dylan" 90210 marathon on all afternoon, so I am contently occupied.  I'm hoping I'm on the upswing from the swine!

Happy birthday, Dad!!

He's out fishing today, so likely won't see this, but it's my Dad's birthday today! It ends up on Thanksgiving every few years, and we couldn't all be more thankful for him! xoxoxo

Stupid swine

Wellp, see ya later Thanksgiving.  Just got back from the doc's office, and they believe I have some variation of the flu/swine flu/H1N1, etc. So my trip to DC will not be happening.  I will be sitting in my apt watching the Macy's parade and the Packers on TV, eating turkey pot pies and feeling generally miserable.  Anyone want to Fed Ex me a turkey dinner?   Guess on the positive side, I'm thankful for my health insurance that got me some Tamiflu in under 24 hours and the list of people waiting to hear the update from the doc.  Those are worth being thankful for!

A post from the BK Broiler

Readers are in for a real treat tonight because here in my apartment, i have the BK Broiler, live and in person.  And for the first time, in his own words, he's going to talk about his experience at hot yoga tonight.  From here on out, this is the BK:
Esteemed readers of Anne's blog, it's a pleasure to be addressing you this evening. For any who have not tried hot yoga before I would highly recommend it. It was both exciting and challenging, and although I felt pretty terrible at times, I found myself with more energy and higher spirits toward the end of the class, than at the beginning. By pushing myself to the limit I found new parts of me. overall I loved it.

Feeling like a grown up

So I just unpacked a new set of dishes and silverware that my fab "cousin" Caroline gave to me in her move.  They all match and aren't chipped.  If my apartment had seating for more than three, I might have a dinner party! I was also the lucky recipient of a functioning vacuum cleaner in the big move.  This is also a big step, because while I've always had vacuum cleaners, honestly, they've never worked for longer than about a week.  This bad boy is a Hoover, and let me tell you, it sucks.  Good thing because Tio Miguel just called and said he'd be checking my apt with white gloves when he gets here tomorrow.
Now, sneaking the old vacuum and dishes out to the street for someone to snatch up.  I've written on the top of the box "Free Dishes." Hopefully someone needs them!

Visitors

This week/weekend is packed full of visitors!  Thursday my Uncle Mike (Tio Miguel as I like to call him) will be staying at Chateau Anne after a Somos Amigos benefit.  That is the mission group that he helped found and that travels down to the Dominican Republic to operate a medical and dental clinic a few times a year.  It's a great organization - I've gone on the trip twice and it's life changing.  Check them out if you're interested.  www.somosamigos.org.

Then on Friday, the BK makes his triumphant return! He will be here a few days this weekend and has committed to go to two hot yoga classes with me during that time! I'm stoked for the company at class and really interested to see how he'll do.  I bet he kicks some hot yoga butt! I will provide an update on his adventure into hot yoga after we go! Yay for visitors!

Weird happenings at hot yoga

So I haven't had a good class story in awhile and I went tonight and had a doozy, so I hope everyone is up for some more tales from hot yoga.  One of the mortal sins of hot yoga is to be disruptive in the room since you're supposed to be "meditating." Well, today there was nothing but disruption.

First, right off the bat, this woman, Jenny, tells one of the new people in class (there were 3 people on their very first day) that if she needed to, she could just pop out into the hall and cool off and take a break.  UM, NO. The second mortal sin is leaving the room.  Nice try Jenny.  So then on the 3rd posture, some dude's phone went off!  The teacher, Nick, who is a flaming gay Italian man, says, "ANSWER IT! I wanna talk to them.  It's your mother isn't it?!"  The poor embarrassed dude didn't answer it.  Nick's best line of the day: a chic in the back row said "It's too hot!" as Nick walked by her mat.  He replied, "Yep! And my shorts are too short! These are both things we're all going to have to deal with!"

Now this woman, Jenny just got weirder and weirder as class progressed.  She was having a hard time and when you're having a hard time you're supposed to sit down and breathe through your nose.  Well she would sit down, but she then proceeded to open her mouth as wide as she could breathing with an audible "HAAAA" and flap her arms up and down like bird wings.  Quite strange! Nick was having none of it.  Told her to knock it off pretty quick.

Anyway, I have football plans all weekend.  Some college tomorrow and pro Sunday.  GO PACK GO!!

Comments and Seth

So no one (other than my Ma) has any thoughts on yesterday's post?  I thought sure it would be thought provoking. Now tonight, I went out for drinks with the best coworker I've ever had to celebrate his last day.  He got a great new opportunity that I couldn't be happier for him about, but I will miss him like crazy! For everyone who knows, Seth, please wish him well. GOOD LUCK!

Deep thoughts for a Monday

So I read something on a blog that is written by a former coworker of mine today that I thought was interesting. I copied and pasted it below, but I've started to see this more and more with relationships in general. I like her recap of it but I've seen it in different variations from this. How did we get to this point and why has this become acceptable? I think it's unfortunate.  Anyway, interested to hear if anyone else has a reaction...

"The roommate broke down for me her recent slow demise with the ex. Or was he an ex? Was he ever her boyfriend? For seven months he took her to dinner, helped her move furniture, cooked brunch in his Upper East Side apartment. They watched Netflix together. Her friends dated his friends. Some times they double-dated with her friends and his friends. (I was never one of those friends, although I am sure he has very nice friends.) He made small talk. He paid for the cabs. He popped up in her calendar at least two nights each week. But he wasn’t her boyfriend.

If he walks like a boyfriend, and he talks like a boyfriend, he must be a boyfriend, right? Alas, for Roommate it was not so easy. For approximately half of that seven month period, she and her gentleman played a passive-aggressive game of “Who Can Care Less?” He avoided discussion, and she refused to force the issue, lest she morph into one of those snake-haired, psychotic boyfriend hunters that twenty-something New York men have learned to fear and loathe.

“Feelings” became a pejorative term.

Sometimes I would come home from wherever I had been on whatever night, sobbing about my own melodramatics, and Roommate’s fellow cheered me up with good-natured advice, and then we all laughed and exclaimed, “Feelings!” and I chuckled through my tears and thought about how easy life would be if we could pack the words “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” and “relationships” into a rocket ship and launch them on a collision course with the outer rings of Saturn. Sometimes I would tell Roommate, “[Your fellow] is so great!” and she would fake laugh, like, “If you only knew…” and then we’d sit on the sofa and watch snow fall and paint our toenails, and bitch, bitch, bitch about our love lives, and WHY WOULDN’T HE NUT UP AND CALL HER HIS GIRLFRIEND?

Finally one day in September she pulled the trigger. “Are you dating anyone else?” she asked. He said, “No.”

“Well, do you want to date anyone else?”

He looked at her like she’d grown a dorsal fin and said, “Isn’t that the same thing?”

No, son. It isn’t. And by the end of the conversation all they had determined was that a) his romantic inertia did not a boyfriend make, and b) he just didn’t give a goddamn. Roommate did not particularly want a future husband, but she did want to know if he wanted a girlfriend or wanted to be her boyfriend so that she could then take new opportunities should they fly in her direction because deep down maybe she did want a boyfriend, and the non-ex-but-really-an-ex just wanted someone to come over three nights a week and cook him pasta and pie and shut up about feelings."

UNK BILL!

So my Unk Bill is here and he has a hot yoga story that he'd like to share with the group. When he finishes with his work here and has time to comment, he'll share. Enjoy!
