My latest adventure in plant care

For those of you who have known me awhile, you might know that I have a bit of a sordid history with plants.  I have, unfortunately, killed every plant that has ever been in my care, including a cactus.  So when my coworker brought a bonsai tree (notoriously the hardest plants to care for) to work for us to co-parent in our cube, I was a little hesitant to take on the responsibility yet again for fear of the same dire outcome.   The first few weeks of the plant's life were nice.  We were watering it, talking to it, showering it with love and attention.  Anything it asked for, we obliged.  You need fertilizer?  Coming right up.  Another spray of water? Don't even have to ask.  Soon our nice, well-mannered plant was drowning in our love and attention and started to lose leaves and look generally awful. After a few days of completely losing hope of ever seeing our once vibrant bonsai flourish again, we put it on the window sill and said, we've done all we can for you, and prepared ourselves for a few final wilting days before it was gone forever. But to our surprise, just the opposite happened! After a few days, the once dry and tepid leaves were bright green and full of life.  New sprouts emerged from the formerly bare trunk.  Our bonsai is officially back to life, and we've learned a valuable lesson.  Give your children everything they need not everything they want.  They need to find their own way on the windowsill of life.

Your wisdom astounds me as much as your Black Thumb of Death. I've seen it first hand, "Plantie! Plantie! Don't leave me!" Windowsills teach a lot............

Too much tending of anything (except a sick child) is never good. It's called smothering. Unless you're a Mom - then it's called "loving you to death!" :-)
